SHABBAT SHALOM B.S.D 22nd August 2008 – 21 Av 5768Please click here for a printable version of this newsletter Our Rabbi, Cantor, Shamash, Honorary Officers, Committee, Officials and Staff welcome you, wish you Shabbat Shalom and Shavuah Tov. PARSHA OF THE WEEK – EKEV Confidence – If the people remain true to G-d, they have nothing to fear from their powerful enemies: If you should say in your heart: These nations are more numerous that I; how can I dispossess them…? Do not be terrified by them; for G-d your G-d is among you, a great and awesome G-d. The only danger they pose is the spiritual one: The carvings of their gods shall you burn with fire; you shall not desire the silver or gold that is on them, or take it to you, lest you be snared with it, for it is an abomination to G-d your G-d. Neither shall you bring an abomination into your house, lest you become accursed like it; you shall utterly detest it, and you shall utterly abhor it, for it is taboo.
DID YOU KNOW? Originally, every Shabbat Haftorah was connected to the Parsha of the week. However, after the 2nd Temple, the sages decided to change the last 10 of the year. Three sad ones are read during the “Three Weeks”. But after that there are seven that speak of the Consolation. Thus, we end the year on a happy note and we can begin a sweet new year on a high note!
