Speechless in Sea Point

Speechless isn’t a very good condition for a Rabbi. (Talk about an occupational hazard!) but I still feel somewhat in awe of the Bat Mitzvah Ceremony this past Sunday.

Maybe it’s because I experienced the event not just as a Rabbi but as a parent to our beloved daughter, Rivka. Or, maybe it was the packed Shul. Or the magnificent presentation by the 24 young ladies in the Club. Or the musical interludes by Cantor Joffe, choir and the musical quartet. Or the Priestly blessing with each mother embracing her daughter. Or the magnificent video presentations produced by the founder and director, Rebbetzin Sara. No words. So see the pics here for yourself.

On that note, we wish a hearty thanks and sad farewell to my niece Estee Pinson of New York who has spent the better part of a year here in Cape Town serving the community, including our very own Bat Mitzvah Club. Estee divided her time between the Cape Town Torah High and Marais Road Shul where she ran her children services. Thank you Estee- we miss you already!

Father’s Day was marked by Rabbi Hecht in good fashion with a Barmy Army fathers and Sons breakfast following Shachris. Davening together is a wonderful bonding opportuntiy for fathers and sons. I know a few parents who regularly take their sons to Shul in for a morning Tefillin and some time together. Priceless!

Mazel tov to Samuel Marcus on his Bar Mitzvah this Shabbas! Mazels to Sam’s parents Claudia and Adam Marcus and to the grandparents Richard Marcus, Bev Datnow and Margi and Raffa Capelouto. Sam’s Hebrew birthday was this Thursday and coincided with his first Aliyah, which he performed with his typical aplomb. Much nachas!

Mazels Tov Dani and Kelly Yudelowitz who named their recently born twins in Shul on Thursday morning! Mazel tov also to proud Zaida Shimon Yudelowitz and to the whole family. much, much nachas!

Chorister Norman and Sharlene Katzeff are off to Israel where they will be celebrating their son Joshua’s wedding to Esty Klejman. Abundant wishes to them on this huge moment and Simcha and the warmest mazel tov to granny Ruth Katzeff. Mazel tov!

Joshua and Isobel Fleishman are off to Rhodes Island to celebrate their grandson David Levy’s Bar Mitzvah in the land of his father’s forefathers!

Daven e caffe has moved to Wednesdays and will take place this Wednesday June 29, 7-8:15am. See you all there!

Shabbat Shalom and happy reading,

Rabbi Dovid Wineberg
